Why You Should Get Your Kids Playing Golf

Get your kids playing golf for a lifetime of fun and sporting activity out in the fresh air.

You’ll love it…

Why you should get your kids playing golf

You’ll love it because playing golf is a great family sport.

You’ll love it because it keeps your children fit and healthy.

And even if you don’t play golf personally, you’ll love it because you get to spend lots of time together.

You can take them for lessons, walk round the golf course while they play, go to the local driving range with them, volunteer for junior golf committees, and if selected for their junior team attend their matches.

If you all play, family vacations are never a problem, just pack up your golf clubs and go, everyone will be happy.  Moreover, playing sport together is a great way to cement family relationships and to create a special bond with your offspring.

You’ll agree, I’m sure, that golf is great exercise, and as they get older they’ll want to play as often as they can.  You’ll find that school vacations become a breeze, as you can happily drop them off at the golf course or range for the day.  I can think of far worst things they could be doing.

You’ll know they have the golfing bug when they practice swinging golf clubs in the home, practice with an imaginary club in front of a mirror and practice putting on the carpet.

How else do kids playing golf benefit?

They’ll also learn qualities that will last a lifetime:

  • sportsmanship
  • integrity
  • consideration for others and
  • how to win and lose graciously

Honesty is integral to golf.  The rules of golf and course etiquette (respect for playing partners) are adhered to even at junior level.

You’ll also find personal pleasure in watching them progress each time they swing a golf club.  And if you’re very lucky, you may find that you have the next Rory McIlroy or Paula Creamer at home. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Most important of all, golf is great fun. It’s a marvellous sport of physical and mental accomplishment for kids and adults alike.  Get your kids playing golf and help them to enjoy a wonderful lifelong sport.

No matter how good they become or how many years they play, it’s a constant challenge and a sport they can never master, which is the attraction and sometimes the frustration of golf.

Before heading to the golf course for the first time

Golf Grip

When starting out playing golf it is essential that you learn the basics of the golf swing before heading to the golf course for the first time.

This you can do at your local golf range and at home, where you can practice as long as you like without the pressures of being out on the course.

As a minimum, you should be able to:

  • grip the club correctly
  • take the proper stance
  • put into practice basic swing techniques

You should also:

  • understand golf course etiquette
  • have the right golf equipment for you

These essential requirements for playing golf are not difficult to learn or achieve, but will help you to enjoy the game far more when you do take those first steps on to the golf course for the first time.

Practice

The golf swing can only be learnt by practice.  At the early stage of your golfing career, this involves lots of repetition to develop the necessary skills and techniques.

There is no better place to practice than your local driving range.  There you can build your confidence and control of the golf club.  Then you will be properly prepared and ready to go out and play.

Remember, that in the same way it requires practice to build a reliable golf swing to begin with, it also needs additional practice to maintain it.

Consider golf lessons to make sure you are practicing the right things and in the right order.  Your local golf pro will give you drills to practice and speed up your progress.

Golf course etiquette

In brief, golf course etiquette is all about the unwritten rules of golf – how to act and behave on the golf course.  This is not anything to worry about, but something you should be aware of when playing on the golf course for the first time.

Perhaps the easiest way to learn this aspect of the game is to play a few rounds of golf with someone who has played before.

Golf equipment for beginners

Always seek advice when buying golf equipment for the first time.  Why Play Golf and How to Get Started provides tips for selecting golf equipment and discusses how to get into golf.

Golf is a sport for all generations

Golf is a great sports activity that the whole family can learn and play together whatever their age or ability levels.  What could be better than sharing a sport with your child or grandchild?

Children love to do things with their parents or grandparents, which is the best way to help them to learn something new.  When a child becomes familiar with a new sport or pastime, it provides them with the self confidence and motivation to learn and get better.

The game of golf also has the advantage of providing long lasting health and fitness benefits such as physical exercise, psychological challenge and long-term friendships, which can last a lifetime.

The golf course or golf driving range is the ideal environment for moms and dads or grandparents to have fun with their children/grandchildren, and is not necessarily too expensive as the number of amenities and new golf courses continue to increase.

Just a week ago I was listening to a sports phone-in program on the radio here in the UK when a listener came on to make a point about the cost of seeing top class sport such as Premiership football (soccer).

To keep this story brief, his point was that for the price of taking his son to just one soccer match, he had been able to purchase for him a junior membership for the year at their local golf club, and he is now hooked on playing golf.

Moreover, it is a sport they will be able to play together, and for a long time to come.  Additional costs are starter level golf equipment and a regular supply of golf balls.  Perhaps, golf is a sport for all generations and not too expensive after all.
