My Favorite Family Games

family gamesWe play fun family games.  My girls are now 11 and 13 and we all still look forward to family game night.  The secret is simple, we have found some fantastic family games.  Each year we update our list of the top 10 best family games and this year is no exception.

Our definition of a great family game is one which is fun to play for both kids and adults, is educational, and the educational benefits do not overshadow the fun.  In other words, we play games for fun and the educational benefit is just a bonus.

Topping off the list is Ravensburger Labyrinth.  We  have been playing this game for years.  It is a maze game requiring participant to use lateral thinking as they shift the maze prior to moving their piece.  Sometimes successfully and other times a slight miscalculation and the maze doesn’t take you to your destination.

If maze games are not your thing. Our list includes several card games.  We love number and math games but our latest addiction (and game currently in the number two spot on our list) is Quiddler.  It is a brilliant word game.  Each card has a letter, and the goal is simply to make words.  It is the perfect family game as bonus points are given for the most words, as well as for the longest word.  So a child with a smaller vocabulary (or an adult if they choose) can win with words like “at, is, or.”

Our list also includes board games, dice games and tile games.  Never a dull moment on family games night at our house!
